John Selby of Otley Road scored the first goal of this year’s Newlands Community Association Shelly Carroll Trophy competition but his side could only draw their opening match against IMS Celtic Sunday.

Aiden Panwar equalised for IMS and they then went ahead through Antoine Burke, only for Otley Road to level matters again as Alex Cusack lobbed keeper Lee Dane.

Otley restored their lead at the start of the second half through Shaun McGoughlan but man of the match Panwar converted a penalty to secure a draw.

Garth Rhodes gave Ravenscliffe’s youngsters a surprise interval lead against Victoria Rangers but they were then swamped in the second half and eventually lost 5-1.

Smiling Mule opened with an impressive 4-1 win against St Georges, Tom Mills grabbing the only consolation to goals from Paul Hickey, Luke Howker, Stu White and Bryce Waddington.

Micky Mathers netted twice, supported by an Adam Brook goal, as Ventus United beat Beldon Sports 3-1, while competition newcomers Victoria Eagles lost 2-0 to Seven Stars.
