LEEDS held off a late fightback by Wolves to make it three straight Sky Bet Championship wins with a 2-1 victory at Elland Road.

The game threatened goals in the first half – with Leeds striker Chris Wood particularly lively – but it took an hour for the opener to arrive in the shape of Sol Bamba's stunning right-footed strike.

United doubled their lead just four minutes later through Toumani Diagouraga's second goal in as many games only for George Saville to half the deficit in the 76th minute.

The home fans grew increasingly anxious as the clock ticked down but the Whites saw out the win to remain on course for a top-half finish.

Wood scored two goals in the second half of Leeds' 3-2 victory over Reading on Saturday and he was inches away from giving his side an early lead with a left-footed shot that hit the outside of the post.

Wolves had begun brightly and they should have hit the front when James Henry volleyed into the ground and wide after finding himself completely unmarked five yards out from Bjorn Sigurdarson's cross.

Leeds had another lucky escape when David Edwards lost his footing after Henry's shot deflected into his path behind the home defence.

But Wood was causing Wolves all kinds of problems at the other end and appeared destined to open the scoring during a period of United pressure.

If he was unlucky to see a 30-yard free-kick fly just past the post and an instinctive shot go straight into the arms of Carl Ikeme, he should have done better than curl an effort wide when it opened up for him at the edge of the box.

Matt Doherty fired wide at the end of a jinking run as Wolves threatened a minute after the half-time interval and Leeds substitute Stuart Dallas saw a fierce volley headed over by Henry.

United started to turn the screw again and they took the lead in style as centre-back Bamba took the ball down on his chest 25 yards out, let it bounce twice before lashing a brilliant right-footed shot across Ikeme and into the top corner.

Leeds were soon 2-0 up when Diagouraga swept Football League young player of the year Lewis Cook's centre home, but Saville curled a shot in from the edge of the box to give Wolves hope.

The recently-introduced Jordan Botaka almost restored Leeds' two-goal advantage with a left-footed strike that rattled the bar, while at the other end fellow substitute Joe Mason had a shot kept out by the feet of Marco Silverstri.

Dallas clipped the top of the bar from 20 yards two minutes from time as United looked to put the game to bed, but two goals proved to be enough for Steve Evans' men.
