UWE Rosler says he is determined to keep Sam Byram as Leeds United head to Yorkshire rivals Doncaster in the Capital One Cup first round tonight.

The homegrown star has emerged as one of the best young players outside of the Premier League in recent seasons and attracted admiring glances from top-flight clubs.

But Rosler is keen to keep his core of talented youngsters together as the Whites seek to build on their encouraging 1-1 draw at home to Burnley on Saturday.

Rosler met with president Massimo Cellino on Tuesday and said that Byram’s future was not discussed.

“The chairman always gave me the indication we would try to keep these players and build a future around them,” said Rosler.

“The future of the club is Sam but not just Sam – there are a lot of talented youngsters here.”

With several Championship clubs having been dumped out of the cup already, Rosler will not be taking Paul Dickov’s League One side lightly.

He is expected to make a number of minor changes but not wholesale ones which could prove costly.

Rosler added: “We want to keep the momentum. There are players banging on the door to start and one or two have a possibility to be involved.”
