Hanson loss proves too big a hindrance

The hurt of just missing out on the play-offs is still leaving a bitter aftertaste as Guiseley see out their fixtures for the reserves and youth teams.

Nethermoor is still busy, with April showers having made the staging of the rem-aining games a lottery.

There are also Airedale and Wharfedale cup finals to fit in before the club staff and volunteers can wind down for the summer.

Guiseley would sooner have had the added logistical problems of arranging their first team's games for the play-offs. However, they missed out on a top-five place in the UniBond Premier Division by one point.

"It was very frustrating but everyone gave it their best shot," said club director Stuart Allen.

"I think it made it a bit more difficult because of James Hanson's injury.

"James was our top scorer and while he was in the team knocking in the goals we had a great chance of winning games.

"With him out, we had Gavin Knight, who is very popular with the supporters and has a good record, but had spent a lot of the season out on loan.

"The others did what they could but I think we struggled without James and to be fair, who wouldn't?

"Take the biggest goal threat out of any team and it is bound to make a huge difference."

Allen admits it will be a while until Hanson is fit again but is hoping he will be back for the start of next season.

He said: "James is badly injured. The medical people have put him in a plaster cast and he was hobbling around on crutches during last week's final game against Kendal Town.

"His ankle isn't broken but they think there could be substantial ligament damage.

"There is never a good time for an injury, especially a severe one, but, though it cost the club in the run-in, James missed just a couple of games.

"He has the full close season to recover and build up his fitness again, hopefully in time to play a full part in our pre-season preparations."
