Patience is a virtue as Guiseley triumph in FA Cup

It took Guiseley an age to break down a resilient Buxton side and they were never assured of a victory until the last kick of the game.

But the Lions duly reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup, where their prize is another home tie against Blue Square Bet Premier side Barrow.

With a significant sum of prize-money, £12,500 for the winners of fourth-qualifying round ties, on offer, not to mention the kudos of a first-round appearance, there was some tension at Nethermoor.

The home supporters were living on their nerves the longer the game went on. There were early chances for the Lions with Reece Meynell going close, Buxton’s keeper making a save to deny Andy Holdsworth and a Josh Wilson effort being deflected wide.

Midway through the first half, Guiseley were still knocking on the door with James Walshaw joining Wilson in threatening the visitors, who had keeper Ian Deakin to thank on many occasions.

The pressure was mounting, and on the half-hour, following a half-cleared corner, Wayne Brooksby whipped the ball back in and Walshaw met it with a header to give the Lions a deserved lead.

They should have added to it with Danny Ellis heading a Brooksby corner just over and later when a Walshaw header, which had Deakin beaten, came back off a post.

Trailing by just one goal, the Derbyshire outfit came out for the second half in determined mood and they began to have some joy. The nerves were jangling all over again as an equaliser looked to be on the cards.

Guiseley worked hard and came back into the game to force some late chances. Mark Bower and Holdsworth went close while substitute Kevin Holsgrove forced yet another decent save out of Deakin.

Brooksby headed over from a Holdsworth free-kick and Holsgrove fashioned himself an opening, but the second goal was elusive.

The blessed relief of the two-goal cushion finally came but it was into stoppage time.

There was good work from Holsgrove in the build-up but the credit went to Nicky Boshell as he fired in a right-foot shot.
