Guiseley still top - but only on goals scored
Workington Town 0, Guiseley 2
Guiseley held on to their top spot in Blue Square Bet North but only by the skin of their teeth today, despite making it four wins from four at the start of the season.
The Lions travelled to Workington and beat their hosts in difficult conditions, with the worst of the weather in Cumbria.
However, Guiseley remain just one of three clubs to have a perfect start and they are only above second-placed Brackley by virtue of scoring more goals.
Both have a plus-13 goal difference, with third-placed Chester FC trailing with plus five.
Workington had some possession in the goalless first half but Guiseley created the one chance of note before the break.
Right back Jamie Clarke found some space but his shot flew over the bar.
Playing with the fierce wind behind them, the Lions fared better after the interval.
Wayne Brooksby fired over after good work from left back Andy McWilliams but just after the hour Brooksby did find the net to open the scoring.
The Lions wrapped up the three points following a 77th-minute penalty but the spot-kick was saved.
A run into the area by Stephen Brogan ended with a foul challenge and, although Gavin Rothery’s strike from the spot was parried by the home keeper, the Lions’ striker reacted to lash the rebound in.
