Nantwich Town 0, Guiseley 2

Guiseley consolidated their position in the UniBond League Premier Division play-off zone with a good win away at last season’s play-off finalists.

Nantwich have been reeling since not gaining promotion to the Conference North last term. They are quite low in the table but the Lions were not dismissive of them and were anxious before their journey.

They had good reason to be as Nantwich remain a tough team to beat.

Guiseley managed a goal in each half which allowed them to smuggle all three points. There were other chances though and the margin of victory could have been greater.

An early goal broke the deadlock, with Guiseley taking an eighth-minute lead thanks to a Jamie Walshaw tap-in.

The chance was set up by good work from Adam Muller and came after debutant striker Andy Bell had failed to get on the end of an earlier cross.

Had Liam Needham and Walshaw had their scoring boots on, the Lions could have turned around three or four goals to the good, while chances in the second half also went awry.

In fact, the game was not put to bed until the 80th minute when the Lions converted from the penalty spot. Former Bantams defender Simon Ainge was fouled in the area and Walshaw stepped forward to ensure all three points.

The win was an important one for the Lions as promotion rivals Kendal Town also tasted victory.

Guiseley are now fourth but have three games in hand on Boston (second) and Retford (third), while being just three points off being second spot themselves.

They could gain those points on Tuesday at home to third-bottom Burscough and set up a mouthwatering title chase for local observers between themselves and table-topping neighbours Bradford Park Avenue.
