GUISELEY are set to pocket a windfall estimated to be around £35,000 from Sheffield United's purchase of their former striker James Hanson.

The Lions are entitled to 25 per cent of the profit from 29-year-old Hanson's transfer from Bradford City – and with the fee believed to be £150,000 plus add-ons, the National League outfit are set to cash in.

The sell-on clause was part of the initial deal with the Bantams which was set by a tribunal.

City were ordered to pay £7,500 and give Guiseley a friendly as compensation for a player who scored 36 goals in 71 games while at Nethermoor after being plucked from Northern Counties East League side Eccleshill United by former City boss Terry Dolan.

After signing for the Blades, Hanson tweeted: "I'm really pleased @Guiseley AFC have got a bit more out of the deal. I hope they can strengthen and stay in the National League."

Guiseley chairman Phil Rogerson said: "We are delighted for James and it is a bonus to be receiving further money for him now.

"We don't know yet how much that will be but it will be most welcome. I thought he would probably stay at City for the rest of his career, so this has come as a surprise for us."

Rogerson admitted: "We were all disappointed when he first went to City. We felt he was worth £15,000 as strikers in the UniBond League, where we were playing at the time, were costing £10,000.

"Eventually we went to a tribunal, who set the terms of the deal, and I must say that ever since we have had a wonderful relationship with Bradford City.

"The agreement was only for one friendly match but they have been bringing their first team down every year since for a pre-season game and those matches have proved to be well supported."

Guiseley have no game tomorrow as they were due to host Sutton United, who are still in the FA Cup and have a lucrative home tie against Leeds United.

Lions manager Adam Lockwood is using the break to fine-tune his squad for the battle to protect their National League status.

He has strengthened the midfield with the loan signing of experienced Kevan Hurst from Mansfield, while releasing striker Oli Johnson from his contract so he can join former Guiseley boss Mark Bower at Bradford Park Avenue.

Hurst, 31, who is on loan for the remainder of the season, has made 380 Football League appearances.

After starting his career as a youth with Sheffield United, he had loan spells with Boston United, Stockport, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe before joining the latter in 2007.

He made 66 appearances for them before moving on to Walsall and then Southend, where he scored 17 goals in 128 games and was part of their League Two promotion-winning team in 2015.

Hurst was released by the Shrimpers in 2016 and joined Mansfield. He has played 12 times for the Stags, scoring one goal, and is likely to make his Lions debut at Wrexham on February 4.

The talented Johnson, who signed for Guiseley in 2014, has been plagued with injuries during his time at Nethermoor, where he made 84 appearances and scored 17 goals. He went out on loan to Avenue earlier in the season.

Johnson started at Nostell Miners Welfare before being snapped up by Stockport County. His performances earned him a transfer to Norwich, who he helped gain promotion to the Premier League in 2011.

He then spent time on loan at Yeovil Town before joining Oxford United in 2012. He moved on to York City, nearer his Wakefield home, in the 2012-13 season, playing just four games for the Minstermen before joining Guiseley.

He helped the Lions win promotion to the National League for the first time in their history in 2015.
