GUISELEY boss Mark Bower believes his side's first win in the National League is a significant step.

The Lions have strengthened their squad since winning promotion to England's fifth tier and were unfortunate opening-day losers at Welling.

So Bower was delighted to beat Altrincham 1-0 in midweek at Nethermoor and said: "It was good to get the win – we needed it.

"There was no panic, it was only the second game of the season, but for confidence and just to settle everyone down, its always nice to get the first win.

"We're pleased to have that and we'll look to build on it now."

Bower has been busy in the transfer market but does not rule out further business.

He said: "We needed a bigger squad after getting promotion. We brought Danny Atkinson in because we obviously needed another keeper and Zac Thompson adds to our options in midfield.

"We've got Danny Boshell available after his suspension for Tuesday and Ben Parker and Oli Johnson are not too far away from fitness, so we've got a decent squad.

"We're not expecting to make any signings soon but you never say never. Players become available all the time and if the right fit comes along, then we have to be interested.

"We have got the transfer window to deal with now and we've got to look at player fitness. If they're playing regularly, they will be fine, but if they're not getting enough game time, we'll have to get them out on loan for a month or so here and there.

"All of our players will be needed over the season but they can't always play and I think that will be their biggest gripe this campaign."

Now that Guiseley are in the top tier of non-League football, they have squad numbers instead of one to 11 – but Bower insists there has been no falling out over their allocation. He explained: "Everything was settled amicably."
