Hyde 0 Guiseley 0

GUISELEY remain in the Vanarama North play-off places, despite being held to a goalless draw at basement outfit Hyde.

The club’s meet again at Nethermoor on Wednesday in the reverse fixture and Saturday’s stalemate did not surprise Lions boss Mark Bower.

He said: “Nobody was under any illusion that we were just going to turn up and win the game. All of the top teams in this league have come here and not won.

“We knew how difficult it was going to be but we also knew there would be long spells when they would play without the ball. When you’ve got the ball under those circumstances you’ve got to be clinical with it, and we weren’t.

“The longer the game went goalless they grew in confidence and they got back into it in the second half. We had enough chances before they got back into the game to have put it out of their reach. Then there was a scramble at the end and if the ball goes in there we are coming home with nothing.”

Hyde did have the ball in Steve Drench’s net at one point but the Lions were saved by an offside flag.

Drench had done well to parry Luke Giverin’s initial shot before Connor Hughes pounced and it was a tight call by the assistant referee.

Drench had made a brilliant save early in the second half to keep a Lee Gregory header out, and he was in action right at the death.

Drench made two fine stops and Andy Pearson hit the bar as Hyde threatened to steal all three points with the last kick of the game.
