Guiseley 3 AFC Fylde 1

GUISELEY got their promotion push in the Vanarama Conference North firmly back on track last night with a victory that scuppered AFC Fylde’s hopes of returning to the summit.

The west coast outfit came to Nethermoor in second place and looking for the win that would have lifted them above Barrow. Fifth-placed Guiseley had other ideas and ran out deserved winners.

Striker Liam Dickinson made his debut for the Lions and fired a 25-yard effort over the bar but home keeper Steve Drench had to make good saves to deny Ritchie Allen and Danny Rowe as both sides looked for the opener.

Guiseley got it just after the half hour mark from the penalty spot. Rowe was given a yellow card following a push in the area and Gavin Rothery sent the visitors’ keeper the wrong way from the spot.

Fylde started the second half brightly and Brad Barnes and Allen both went close before a Rothery shot clipped the bar at the other end. Just ten minutes into the second period Guiseley’s lead was doubled when Joe Booth turned the ball into his own net.

The points were made safe when Adam Boyes netted a third. He pounced to slot in from the edge of six-yard box after the Coasters’ keeper could only parry a Wayne Brooksby shot.

The visitors claimed a consolation strike nine minutes from time when Rowe’s header went in off a post and they came close to reducing the arrears further when a Barnes volley crashed against an upright deep into stoppage time.

Farsley’s friendly at home to Hunslet FC finished 2-0, while tonight sees Albion Sports in action on the same Throstle Nest ground. Albion host Garforth Town in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

FC Halifax Town bowed out of the FA Trophy after losing 1-0 to Wrexham at The Shay. A first-half goal by Wrexham captain Neil Ashton was enough to seal the win and send Kevin Wilkin’s men through to the semi-finals.
