Guiseley 1 Worcester City 0

GUISELEY stayed top of the Vanarama Conference North table with a narrow win over Worcester at a blustery Nethermoor.

This was despite finishing with ten men after Gavin Rothery picked up a late second yellow card.

The Lions are above Boston United on goal difference only but they are the only two sides with their 100 per cent starts intact after three games.

There are three clubs below them on seven points, with that group topped by neighbours Bradford Park Avenue.

Guiseley have been strong defensively under former Bradford City centre back Mark Bower and have yet to concede this season.

They came close to losing that statistic early on Saturday when the unmarked Daniel Nti had a free header but he placed it wide.

Guiseley had created a few half-chances before breaking the deadlock in the 28th minute. Wayne Brooksby put the ball back into the danger area after a corner had been half cleared and Danny Forrest nodded in.

There was a good chance to make it 2-0 but Adam Boyes headed Alex McQuade's cross wide.

Forrest could have bagged himself a brace after the interval but, having taken Danny Boshell's cross, the striker was foiled by visiting keeper Nathan Vaughan.

Worcester had a spell of possession as they came looking for an equaliser but the Lions defended well.

They almost put the gloss on their win with a second goal but Brooksby's free-kick was palmed onto the post by Vaughan.

Bower said: "It was a difficult game and I think the conditions stopped us playing the way we like to.

"We had a good first half with the wind at our backs but they (Worcester) had one good chance.

"We scored a really good goal while we were on top and Danny had a great chance early in the second half. But after getting himself in a good position, the keeper made a save.

"With it being so difficult in that second half, we looked for the players to dig it out by showing character and organisation to see it through and they did that effortlessly.

"I can't remember Worcester having a single chance in the second half."
