Guiseley take a two-goal cushion into the Conference North play-off second leg at North Ferriby United on Saturday but boss Mark Bower is warning his players against complacency.

Former Bantams defender Bower, in his first spell as a manager, was delighted with last night’s 2-0 win in the home match.

Yet the Lions chief was guarded as he explained: “It was a good result and a terrific clean sheet, which gives us a bit of a boost but not an advantage.

“It is always difficult against Ferriby because they defend high up the pitch. That does sometimes leave space at the back and we managed to get in behind them on a few occasions last night.

“But its only half of the job done. It’s half-time in the tie – all the cliches will come out – but the bottom line is that we have to prepare right for Saturday.

“We would definitely have taken any kind of lead from the first meeting but we didn’t set the world on fire in that game, we simply took our chances better than Ferriby did.

“We won’t be going there to defend because if we get an early goal then the tie really is in our favour. If Ferriby get one then the pressure is very much back on us, so there are no thoughts about going to try to close the game down.”

Bower points out that runners-up Ferriby only missed out on the Skrill North title on the last day of the season, which let in AFC Telford United to bag the only guaranteed promotion place to the Conference Premier.

Guiseley did the double over them in the regular season, so Saturday’s hosts will be fired up to exact what could be the perfect response to three defeats.

If Ferriby win by more than two goals then they will be in the play-off final at the Lions’ expense.

Bower said: “We have got a few with bumps and bruises and one or two who have been struggling with illness over the past week or so.

“Steven Drench missed last night and Danny Ellis got injured, so we have to monitor certain situations.

“I think Dan will get over his knock, because it takes a lot to force him off the pitch, but he has had a few days to get himself right.

“I think he will be ready for this game and the way Ferriby get balls into the box, Danny will be a very important player for us.”
