6:30am Wednesday 7th December 2011 in Farsley By Ian Whiting
Guiseley consolidated their third place in Blue Square Bet North with a 2-1 win in a tricky away fixture at Blyth Spartans.
Blyth may be bottom of the pile but they remain a tough team to beat at home and it was a long and arduous journey for Steve Kittrick’s men.
Guiseley created a host of chances and broke the deadlock early. A header from Chris Senior was deflected for a corner and Andy Holdsworth swung the flag-kick in for Simon Ainge to net a good shot from just outside the six-yard box.
That 19th-minute strike was the only goal of the first half, despite several more chances for the visitors.
There was a flurry of activity just after the hour mark. Guiseley striker Danny Forrest hit the bar with a fiercely-struck shot following an excellent move in the 65th minute.
A minute later Blyth levelled when Lee Mason headed home from a corner but Forrest was not to be denied his goal. He had the Lions back in front within a minute after firing in from 20 yards.
Farsley also helped their push for a play-off place when they won 1-0 at home against Durham City in Evo-Stik Division One North.
It was a game of few chances but a Gareth Grant shot forced a 75th-minute corner and when Simeon Bambrook delivered it, Mark Jackson converted with a header.
Eccleshill United banked three points with a 2-0 win at Dinnington Town in NCEL Division One.
Andy Fieldhouse and Marcus Edwards were on target for the Eagles.
In the NCE League Cup, one of the local representatives when through to the third round while another floundered.
Brighouse Town were beaten 5-0 at Premier Division rivals Pickering but Thackley progressed.
The Dennyboys were taken to extra-time by Division One leaders Worksop Parramore but edged through 2-1.
Andy Philp gave them a first-half lead, Scott Preece equalised for the home side but a Deroy White header in the second half of extra-time won it for Thackley.
Albion Sports play their West Riding County Cup second-round tie at Horsfall Stadium tonight.
It was shelved last Wednesday because the council-owned ground was unavailable due to the Unison strike action.
