The Lions turned in a five-star display at Nethermoor tonight to earn an impressive 5-0 victory over Blyth Spartans and send out a clear message to the rest of the Blue Square Bet North Division.

Guiseley were the surprise package last term but ended the campaign by reaching the play-off final and results like this suggest they will be strong contenders again.

Manager Steve Kittrick strengthened his squad to ensure they would be challengers again and two of his summer recruits shared three of last night’s goals as Blyth were blown away.

Danny Forrest – snapped up on a permanent deal after a loan spell last season – had the Lions’ first chance of the evening in the fourth minute but had to wait until just after the half-hour to break the deadlock.

The former Bantams striker fired in a good finish and just five minutes later provided the assist as Danny Boshell made it 2-0. Just two minutes into the second half, summer recruit Lee Ellington rifled in after latching on to a rebound.

Later in the half, skipper Simon Ainge headed home from a Boshell corner and Ellington wrapped the scoring up seven minutes from time when he slotted the ball under the visitors’ keeper from eight yards.

Meanwhile, Farsley AFC also enjoyed a big home victory as they romped to a 4-2 win over Trafford in the Evo-Stik Division One North, despite going a goal down.

A foul by Tom Jackson led to a penalty for the visitors and Joe Shaw netted.

Farsley hit back through Ben Jones a minute later and Simeon Bambrook netted a quick-fire brace in the second half.

Dave Stead put the home side 4-1 up before a Tom Bentham strike made the scoreline better reading for the visitors.

Brighouse Town also managed a home win but they had to mount a stoic defensive rearguard at times to edge a 2-1 victory over Scarborough Athletic.

Jake Weaver and Andy Hawker were on target for Town but it was young keeper Clark Lydon who was the real hero.

Silsden progressed to the preliminary round of the FA Cup after beating Rossington Main on penalties at the Doncaster outfit’s home in last night’s replay.

The sides scored one apiece in the regulation 90 minutes and both added another in extra time before James Nettleton netted the decisive fifth spot-kick to win the shoot out 4-2.
