Cash-strapped Farsley Celtic Football Club is trying to go into administration in a bid to avoid being wound up at the High Court next week.

The desperate move has been made after legal action to dissolve the club has been lodged by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs over unpaid tax.

An official statement on behalf of the club reads: “For a number of years, as many supporters will know, the club has struggled with the financial effects of continued non-league success.

“The club’s financial difficulties have recently been made more acute by the service of a winding up petition for unpaid taxes brought by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, and the Revenue’s reluctance to agree to the club’s proposals for repayment based upon the realisation of the sale of a piece of land for residential development at their Throstle Nest site.

“The hearing to wind up the company is listed on Wednesday, July 1 at The High Court in London. The Revenue, despite a request to do so, have refused to agree to adjourn the hearing pending the formal appointment of an administrator, a matter that the board formally agreed to do last week in the hope of ensuring that it continues to trade.”

Celts president John Palmer said: “We have no choice but to consider administration. I have worked tirelessly to try and raise sufficient money to avoid the process but the economic climate means that investors are tightening their belts.

“It is profoundly sad, because we sit on over six acres of land, we have a Sports Hall and I believe, that with a bit of work, a club that the people of West Leeds would come out and support.

“Unfortunately, the Revenue are reluctant to allow us time to pay.

“The board of directors resolved to enter administration at a meeting last week. We have held meetings with a couple of insolvency practitioners who are working up until Wednesday’s deadline in the hope that the winding up hearing will be adjourned so as to give time to the formalities associated with the appointment of an administrator.”
