With nine of the area’s ten leading semi-pro clubs being denied action at the weekend due to the cold snap, three of them are hoping to get back on the pitch tonight in two fixtures in different cup competitions.

There is a derby on the cards as Campion, in only their second season on the non-league ladder, welcome Farsley Celtic for a West Riding County Cup quarter-final.

Both clubs are seventh in their respective divisions, which are four steps apart on the pyramid system.

James Bicknell’s Campion are just outside the play-off places in Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One, while Adam Lakeland’s Celts are the County Cup holders and are challenging for promotion from the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.

Pontefract Collieries are already in the semi-finals after they beat their NCEL Premier Division rivals Harrogate Railway Athletic 5-1 on Monday, despite The Rail having home advantage.

Campion’s lower-tier rivals Eccleshill United travel to Premier Division Athersley Recreation for a NCE League Cup second-round tie.

It will be a good test for Sean Regan’s men as the Rec are 17th in the top tier, while the Eagles are second in Division One.

That puts the Eagles in an automatic promotion place going into the second half of the season.

Eccleshill suffered a 2-0 defeat at Glasshoughton Welfare a week last Saturday in their last run out, but The Rec will be feeling vulnerable after their last two games ended in 5-1 defeats.

With temperatures rising, there should be no worries about frozen pitches.

However, with heavy rain forecast throughout today there could be problems with waterlogged surfaces.
