Buildbase FA Trophy first qualifying round: Farsley Celtic 1 South Shields 1

FARSLEY Celtic will have to make the arduous trip up to the north east for a replay on Tuesday after their Buildbase FA Trophy first qualifying round home tie with South Shields ended all-square.

The Mariners booked their second bite at the cherry with a last-minute penalty, but it was the least they deserved.

Carl Finnigan’s spot-kick beat Graeme McKibbon after the Farsley stopper had made a string of fine saves.

His first came in the second minute, and he had to make an even better one just two minutes later as Shields’ Gavin Cogdon and Robert Briggs both came close to opening the scoring.

McKibbon made another superb stop in the 11th minute when one on one with Cogdon.

Farsley’s first chance came on the quarter-hour but James Walshaw’s effort was deflected for a corner.

Walshaw was at the sharp end of most of the Celts’ best attacks, and he forced the Mariners keeper Liam Connell into a couple of good saves.

It was Walshaw who beat Connell when the Celts broke the deadlock just after the hour, the striker planting a header into the bottom corner as Luke Parkin crossed to the near post.

Farsley substitute Paul Walker picked out Walshaw with a through ball two minutes later, but the striker’s powerful shot was well saved.

Walker went close himself in the 74th minute but, after dribbling past two defenders, his curling shot was just wide.

The Mariners’ skipper Julio Arca - the former Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Argentina midfielder - sent in a long-range shot that just sailed over McKibbon’s goal as the visitors sought a deserved equaliser.

Parity was eventually restored just into stoppage time as Shields’ substitute Jamie Holmes was fouled in the area before Finnigan steered the ball past McKibbon.

The Celts’ keeper had another save to make in the third minute of time added on.

The replay means that Farsley's scheduled midweek game at Witton Albion - in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division on the same night - has been shelved as they face their Division One North opponents for a third meeting this month.

South Shields knocked the Celts out of the League Cup at Mariners Park on penalties.
