FARSLEY CELTIC suffered agony in a penalty shoot-out as they exited the Integro League Cup at the first-round stage away to Evo-Stik League newcomers South Shields.

The home side experienced ecstasy as they fired in their five spot-kicks after the Celts had mounted a dramatic late comeback from a two-goal deficit to take the tie to the lottery of penalties.

Following a goalless first half, the Mariners broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second period when Michael Richardson chipped over Celts keeper Kyle Trennery. Then less than two minutes later, Shields skipper John Shaw headed his side into a two-goal lead.

Farsley hit back with what looked a consolation strike in the 88th minute when Jimmy Pollard netted a well-struck free-kick – but just into stoppage time, they were awarded a penalty and Luke Parkin levelled the tie at 2-2.

Parkin netted his second from spot, either side of Atkinson brothers Chris and Ben, in the shoot-out. But the Celts were beaten as the Mariners converted their last two penalties, while Pollard rattled the crossbar with the visitors' fourth as the shoot-out finished 5-3.

Farsley boss Adam Lakeland had rotated his squad, with leading scorer James Walshaw, club captain Danny Ellis, assistant player-manager Mark Bett and first-choice keeper Graeme McKibbon all on the bench.

There will no doubt be a different line-up when the Mariners travel to Throstle Nest for a first qualifying round FA Trophy tie a week on Saturday.

BRIGHOUSE TOWN are also out of the League Cup after a heavy defeat at Marine.

The Merseyside outfit are Premier Division counterparts of Farsley, while Vill Powell's side – like South Shields – are in Division One North.

Marine took an early lead as Danny Mitchley broke the deadlock in the 13th minute but Town levelled midway through the half when Danny Grimshaw slotted in a penalty.

Parity lasted just two minutes before the home side were also awarded a spot-kick and Mitchley fired that in.

Goals from Michael Brewster and Liam Tongue, in the space of two minutes around the hour mark, saw the home side comfortably through to the next round 4-1.

SILSDEN exited the Hallmark Security League's cup competition as they went down 3-0 at home to Burscough, with the visitors' Liam Diggle grabbing a second half hat-trick in the Macron Cup first-round tie.

The Premier Division strugglers put their woeful league form behind them as they knocked out Danny Forrest's runaway Division One leaders.

A tight first half ended goalless but Diggle broke the deadlock in the 46th minute before adding a second goal 30 minutes later and wrapping up his treble in added time.

Andy Wood was also a hat-trick hero as his goals fired LIVERSEDGE to three Premier Division points in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League.

Sedge moved up two places to 14th with a 3-2 home win over Parkgate.

Wood netted in both halves to put Sedge two goals up before the visitors levelled through strikes from Jassim Alali and Kieran Hurst – but Wood scored the winner five minutes from time.

There is a big derby in the same division tonight as ALBION SPORTS host THACKLEY.

The 13th-placed Dennyboys are one point above their hosts but have played a game more, so the Lions could leapfrog them with a home win and still have a game in hand.
