This weekend’s local semi-professional football action gets underway tomorrow night with a match that is much more significant and poignant than a run-of-the-mill friendly.

Brighouse Town host Shaw Lane as the clubs meet for game in memory of Dan Wilkinson, just 11 months after tragedy struck.

Wilkinson was playing for Shaw Lane at Brighouse in an Evo-Stik League Cup tie on September 12 when he collapsed on the pitch, and the best efforts of the paramedics and staff at the local hospital could not save him.

All of the proceeds from tomorrow night’s game (admission is £5 for adults and £3 for concessions) will go directly to The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation.

The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday July 18, but was re-arranged.

That doesn’t affect Town’s friendly on Saturday, when as new boss Vill Powell takes his side to Basford United for what will be their final warm-up game.

Brighouse and Farsley will begin their Evo-Stik League season a week on Saturday, with Division One North side Town hosting Skelmersdale United. while the newly-promoted Celts’ Premier Division campaign starts with a home game against Coalville Town.

Adam Lakeland’s Farsley make a short trip to Brighouse’s counterparts Mossley on Saturday for their last friendly.
