JUST as Farsley Celtic's disappointing start to the season appeared to be taking an upward turn after three victories in a five-game unbeaten run it dipped again with two derby defeats.

A loss last weekend at long-term rivals Ossett Albion was followed by a 2-1 defeat by Brighouse Town.

Farsley bossNeil Parsley and his assistant Mark Jackson have been actively re-jigging their squad as they attempt change the club’s fortunes.

Over the last few weeks there have been comings and goings, most recently the dual registrations of Bradford Park Avenue defenders Adam Clayton and Chris Howarth.

The changes have led to some unrest and departures but they claimed their biggest casualty this week when James Riley left Throstle Nest.

The centre back was popular with the players and a fans’ favourite but he didn’t wish to take a back seat.

After signing – for rivals Ossett Albion – on Thursday, Riley gave his reasons on the Farsley website, he said, “I have ended up down the order and I believed I should have been playing.

“I had three good years at Farsley and will miss everyone associated with the club. However I need to be playing at my age and I have made the decision to sign for Ossett.”

Riley’s omission to thank Parsley and Jackson was probably borne out of frustration on the player’s part. However, the management team will point to the results in the early stages of the campaign and will stand by their decisions.

Riley added, “I didn't want to leave but I was in a situation was one where I felt I had to. I wish I had been given more time to prove myself instead of being replaced. I am looking forward to the future with my new club and hopefully we can push on to the play-offs.

“I would like to thank Gaz Liversedge (physio) for looking after me over the years and I would like to wish the lads and the supporters all the best for the rest of the season. I would also like to thank Ian Holmes for his sponsorship over the seasons.”
