Glossop North End 2, Farsley Celtic 1

A DREADFUL opening quarter hour for Farsley Celtic proved decisive last night as Glossop North End raced to a 2-0 lead inside 13 minutes.

The Evo-Stik Division One North newcomers, who are second in the table, had a dream start as Jamie Rainford bagged a brace.

He opened the scoring in the ninth minute and added his second soon after to leave the visitors reeling.

However, Neil Parsley’s Farsley rallied and Neil Stevens pegged a goal back just minutes before the break.

There were chances at both ends in the second half, which the Celts arguably edged, and Josh Grant came agonisingly close to an equaliser when his deflected shot was well saved by the home keeper, condemning Farsley to a fourth defeat from their opening six games.

Meanwhile, in the FA Cup, Thackley needed a last-gasp equaliser in normal time to take hosts Whickham into extra-time in a first qualifying round replay but the home side won on penalties.

Sam Cooke netted the Dennyboys’ last-minute equaliser after the home side’s Craig Jelly had broken the deadlock in the 38th minute.

Thackley led for the first time in the tie - the initial meeting had ended goalless - when substitute Joe Brown made it 2-1 in the first period of extra-time but a minute later Whickham’s Callum Broadhead levelled.

The Northern League outfit won the penalty shoot-out 3-1 to progress to the next round.

Damian Hopkins netted for Thackley as his team-mates either missed or saw their efforts saved.

Steve Hastings, Jordan Fisher and Matt Fitzpatrick’s spot-kicks won it for home side.
