Richard Marshall stunner rescues Bradford Park Avenue
12:18am Wednesday 13th March 2013 in Farsley By Ian Whiting
Richard Marshall supplied Avenue’s equaliser
Gainsborough Trinity 1, Bradford Park Avenue 1
Bradford Park Avenue earned a point at the home of one of their Blue Square Bet North promotion play-off rivals thanks to a stunning equaliser from Richard Marshall.
Gainsborough would have hauled themselves up to sixth place with a home win but Avenue denied them that and kept their own chances of a promotion finish alive at the same time.
Avenue began in positive fashion but were hit by a route-one strike on the counter-attack in the seventh minute. Home keeper Jason White launched a goal kick, midfielder Craig Nelthorpe flicked it on and Paul Connor controlled it before stroking the ball past Avenue stopper John Lamb.
The visitors came close to an equaliser directly from the restart, Marshall’s square pass finding Alex Davidson who was foiled by White before heading the rebound over.
It was that kind of game – frenetic, end to end, chances for both sides. However, the goal that banked Avenue a point was hardly even a half chance.
Just before the hour mark, the ball dropped to Marshall and sat up nicely. He spotted the Trinity keeper slightly off his line and struck it on the half-volley from fully 25 yards to add to his collection of top-drawer goals.
Elsewhere, Farsley’s trip to Mossley in Evo-Stik League Division One North was postponed following a late afternoon pitch inspection.
There will be a lunchtime pitch inspection at Horsfall Stadium today, with Albion Sports’ home game in Baris Northern Counties East League Division One looking to escape the wintry weather.
Albion’s divisional rivals Eccleshill United have already been thwarted as their scheduled home game against AFC Emley has been shelved. Emley have a Sheffield & Hallamshire County Cup tie which takes precedence.
Silsden are also on weather watch as they hope to host Colne in the North West Counties League Premier Division.
