Rain's a pain for local clubs
Continuous rain this afternoon put paid to home fixtures for three of the local semi-professional sides, the most frustrating of which was GUISELEY'S UniBond Challenge Cup fourth-round tie.
The clash against Premier Division counterparts Eastwood Town had been postponed three times previously. The original date was January 5 and the clubs will make a fifth attempt on Saturday.
This weekend should have seen the quarter-finals taking place, with a trip to Ilkeston Town awaiting the eventual winners of this ill-fated fixture.
An announcement on the Guiseley website confirmed tonight's disappointment. It stated: "Despite heroic efforts by the groundstaff to make the pitch playable by 2pm, the subsequent downpours waterlogged it again."
It was a similar story at other grounds as both Northern Counties East Premier Division games featuring local sides were washed out.
LIVERSEDGE were denied the chance to reclaim second place with a win over Shirebrook Town when their Clayborn ground failed a pitch inspection.
"We got a referee in at 4.45pm and he had no doubts," said Sedge secretary Bryan Oakes.
"There was standing water on it in the morning and when it was forked it all drained away - but the heavens opened again and there was nowhere for the latest lot to go, so it just gathered again."
ECCLESHILL informed Pickering Town at 3.30pm not to travel to Bradford, with Eagles secretary Paul Jarvis saying: "The rain that started at lunchtime just never stopped.
"We had worked on it solidly in the morning but once it started coming down again we were never going to rescue the fixture. We will wait for the rearranged date."
