ALBION Sports tasted defeat last night for the first time this season, being beaten 3-2 at home by Maltby Main in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Kulwinder Sandhu’s side had won through the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup in their first competitive fixture and then won their first league game, without conceding a goal in either.

Their defence was finally breached at the weekend but their resolve remained intact as they rescued a point from what seemed a hopeless position.

They were 3-1 down at Staveley MW going into the last minute but earned a point as substitute Redmond Lee forced an own goal by Tom Ellis, and Danny Facey netted a stoppage-time equaliser.

Last night saw them on the wrong end of a late strike as Maltby eased to victory after Albion’s keeper Jake Lofthouse was sent off and the visitors scored from the resulting penalty.

A Sam Sweeney strike had given Maltby an 11th-minute lead but Josh Barden, brother of Albion skipper Joe and a new signing after playing in pre-season as a trialist, equalised midway through the first half.

Into the last 20 minutes, Jack Conley restored Maltby’s lead with a neat volley, and the match ended with the ignominy of Lofthouse’ s red card and Danny Patterson netting from the spot-kick.

Eccleshill United bounced back from their 4-1 home defeat at the weekend to earn their first maximum of the season in Division One.

The Eagles beat Glasshoughton Welfare 2-0 after a humbling loss to Shirebrook Town last Saturday.

Luke Harrop gave them a first-half lead when he rounded the visiting keeper and slotted home after a bustling run.

Harrop turned provider early in the second half as his deep cross was headed home by Jonny Irving for Eccleshill’s second.
