ECCLESHILL United's neighbours are not exactly noisy just yet but the new rivals have quickly established themselves on the non-league ladder.

Campion stepped up onto the football pyramid this season, providing yet more local competition for players’ signatures, sponsorship from Bradford businesses and even another temptation for prospective supporters.

The Eagles’ chairman of football Adrian Benson doesn’t see it that way, however.

He is looking forward to building a rapport with another Bradford club and developing a friendly rivalry.

Benson said: “During pre-season, people were asking me how I felt about someone treading on our toes and telling me how angry and disappointed I must be.

“What nonsense – I’m highly delighted that Campion have joined and we should welcome the competition, not feel threatened.

"I explained to all the doubters that I like Campion and I’m looking forward to two more derby games a season, and if we and they both get promoted we could have eight derby games every season, and that would be brilliant.

“If you’re playing a local side, your gate doubles because both sets of fans have a short car journey or a bus ride, and the atmosphere is always great with loads of good-natured banter and ribbing.

“I also asked the people who were making assumptions what they would prefer on a Tuesday night in November or February – a journey to Nottingham or Lincoln or a trip to Scotchman Road for a good game, a pint and a bit of banter? It’s a no-brainer.

“I’m glad Campion have come up and want them to provide tough opposition and to push us all the way.

"I think that any challenge is a good challenge as it makes you dig that little bit deeper.”
