THE Eagles' eerie could not be on higher ground at the moment as they look down on their Toolstation Northern Counties East League rivals from the summit of Division One.

Eccleshill United have won all four of their league games so far this term. They also won one League Cup tie before their unblemished start ended with an exit from that competition in the second round.

Sean Regan is still justifiably delighted with the efforts of his side but warned: "There's a long way to go."

Local rivals Campion could have stayed above Regan's men had they won last Saturday but James Bicknell's side suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

Yet Regan knows that what other clubs do has no bearing on what his side does – or can achieve.

He explained: "I didn't hear Campion's result last Saturday so I didn't know that we were top. But it wouldn't have made a difference to what I said to the players in the dressing room after our win against Brigg Town.

"It's a happy camp at the minute but it's the old cliche that we'll be taking it one game at a time and treating every opponent on their merits. We have to try to keep going and picking the points up, getting the wins here and there.

"We all want it to be more than that though because it's about the football. We all know that sometimes you have to grind out the results but we're going to try to keep the performances coming as well.

"It was tough last weekend (4-3 home win over Brigg) but I thought we did well against a very good, organised side. I know Brigg's management team and they are two men who I admire. They know the game and have their side playing well and we struggled at times.

"But we looked a lot better and I thought we had control of the game even though we had Charlie Flaherty and Alex Cusack – both players who have a big influence on our side – missing. The lads who came in for them did exceptionally well."

Being top of the table at the beginning of September means very little but Regan is determined that his side will be in the reckoning at the end of April.

The Eagles boss said: "It's always nice to be top but it's early days and there is always room for improvement.

"We have to keep doing what were doing and keep learning and developing along the way. That's what success is built on."
