ECCLESHILL United have filled their managerial position and although they did not get their preferred choice, the Eagles' hierarchy believe they have got an even better option.

Mark Greaves has been handed the manager's role, while Sean Regan has been installed as head of coaching.

It is understood that the club approached former Liversedge boss and Thackley assistant Regan in the hope of tempting him back into local non-League football but he is too busy with other commitments to give the job the full focus needed.

Former Sedge assistant manager Greaves beat off some high-profile candidates to land the role and he is delighted that Regan will be on hand to offer his wealth of experience when needed.

Eccleshill chairman of football Adrian Benson said: "I think it's fair to say Sean was one of the names at the top of our list when we first started our search.

"However, we were overwhelmed by the quality and number of applicants who showed an interest in our club.

"It shows that we are a good prospect and people are keen to come and work with a blank sheet of paper as we return to local roots after the five-year tie-up with RIASA (Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy).

"When we spoke to Sean, it was clear that he has far too much going on for him to be in a position to manage a club at this level.

"Mark impressed us in interview and, although we had applicants who are working or have worked higher up the pyramid, we chose him for his knowledge and local contacts.

"It doesn't always work appointing a manager who is high-profile. Sometimes you need a person who knows this league and Mark certainly does.

"He's worked in it for a while and he knows the kind of player that can prosper."

The highly-qualified Regan has worked in the professional game and for various football associations. And even though he cannot commit to the Eagles on the basis they offered, he is prepared to give the club the benefit of his vast experience.

That is something that Greaves is looking forward to as he hopes to learn from working alongside Regan.

Benson said: "We went for Mark because of his obvious qualities and local knowledge and Sean will oversee coaching schedules and development.

"We have told Mark he is in full control of first-team matters and match-day preparations.

"It was noticeable that he asked that if Sean was available on any match day that he wanted him by his side. Mark is really keen to see close up just how someone like Sean works and he wants to pick his brains."
