Brighouse Town clinched the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division title with two games to spare after a 2-0 home win over Retford United.

Town cut their celebrations short because they face back to back games against last season’s title rivals Bridlington Town, starting tomorrow at the Dual Seal Stadium.

Saturday’s game was won courtesy of a first-half Tom Matthews strike, followed by substitute Leon Henry’s second half goal. Chairman Ray McLaughin said: “It was a messy dressing room after that. The celebrations continued in the clubhouse afterwards.”

Town already have more than the 97 points they racked up last season when they ended as runners-up and they would break the hundred point barrier with a home victory over mid-table Brid.

Thackley were held to a 1-1 draw at home in their final home game of the campaign when Pickering Town came from a goal down in the mid-table clash.

The Dennyboys opened the scoring through Matt Mathers following a goalless first half but they led for just eight minutes before Ryan Woodhead fired in the visitors’ equaliser.

Eccleshill United moved up to fourth place in Division One when they came from behind to edge a five-goal derby thriller.

The Eagles made the short trip to Leeds-based Yorkshire Amateur and, although Ryan Mottley-Henry netted twice for the home side, goals from Charlie Flaherty, Connor Shefte and Ryan Jones ensured the points came back with Lee Duxbury’s men.
