Eccleshill United chairman Adrian Benson hailed a “dream come true” as his side won the West Riding County Cup for the first time in their history.

The Eagles were big underdogs against Conference North outfit Harrogate Town but won 1-0 thanks to a last-gasp Marcus Edwards penalty.

The victory at Valley Parade sent Eccleshill’s supporters into raptures and Benson said: “Winning the County Cup is a dream come true.

“We have worked so hard over the last few years and we have beaten some good sides to get to this final.

“Lee Duxbury (manager) and Mark Ellis (director of football) deserve a lot of credit but let’s take nothing away from the players who won the game.

“I’m so proud of my club and everyone who has been involved in this success.”

Former Bantams midfielder Duxbury insisted his side deserved their victory.

“Like any team we go out to play against, we go out to win and because it was Harrogate Town it wasn’t any different,” he said.

“I have been at a level where you go to Nottingham Forest or Leeds United and think a draw will be a good result but this is different. Cup football is all about getting the job done and we did that.

“There is a lot of talent at this club – not just in the starting 11 but right through the squad of players. I have instilled a bit of steel to add to that talent and make Eccleshill a tough team to beat.

“I’m delighted with the win on behalf of the lads because they are a good bunch.”
