Yorkshire were made to follow-on by Surrey during the third afternoon at the Kia Oval, reaching tea at 18-2 in their second innings.
The White Rose, replying to 414, were bowled out for 229 in their first innings and started the second 185 runs in arrears.
They advanced from 176-7 at lunch, with Jonny Bairstow one of the last three wickets to fall for 95 when he edged Jade Dernbach to first slip having attempted to drive.
Nineteen-year-old left-arm seamer Sam Curran finished the innings with six wickets, the last of Josh Shaw for 29 being his 100th in first-class cricket.
Curran was capped at lunch, and is the fourth youngest Surrey player to receive that award. He is also their fourth youngest player to take 100 first-class wickets.
Later, he struck again early in Yorkshire’s second innings when he bowled Che Pujara for nought off the inside edge. That came after Dernbach had Alex Lees caught at second slip, the score slipping to 10-2.
Adam Lyth is unbeaten on eight and Joe Root five
