Surrey reached tea at 209-6 from 64 overs on day one against Yorkshire at the Kia Oval.
The hosts advanced from 97-4 at lunch, losing Dean Elgar for 61 and Sam Curran for 19.
Elgar lost his leg stump as he played all around a Joe Root delivery as the hosts slipped to 137-5 before Curran edged behind to become Steve Patterson’s second victim shortly afterwards.
Ollie Pope, 20, reached a 107-ball fifty shortly before tea, while Rikki Clarke helped him take Surrey beyond 200 for a first batting point.
