HARTSHEAD Moor defeated Wakefield St Michael's by 21 runs in the All Rounder Cricket Bradford Premier League's Jack Hampshire Cup final at Pudsey Congs.

Skipper Danny Squire was the man who proudly lifted the trophy, but the undoubted star of the show was all-rounder Mohammad Khan.

He made a magnificent 131 not out and followed up by taking 2-17 as the Championship Division Two leaders defeated a battling St Michael's side to complete the first part of what they hope will be a double.

Khan, who returned to the club for a second spell, passed 1,000 runs in all competitions when he reached 42.

Khan, who needs a further 178 in five matches to get to 1,000 league runs, enabled Hartshead Moor to dominate this match from the moment Squire won the toss.

The dependable James Hardcastle proved to be the perfect foil for Khan in an opening stand of 102.

His 39 was important in helping to provide a sound foundation from which Hartshead Moor could build a match-winning score.

Ahsan Butt was dismissed for ten but Khan found another willing ally in Joe Bowman as they added an unbeaten 101 for the third wicket.

Khan clearly enjoyed batting on a good Pudsey Congs track as he struck two sixes and 17 fours in a 110-ball innings.

Bowman made 43 not out at a run a ball with a six and five fours as Hartshead Moor finished on 227-2 in their 40 overs.

It said much for the character of the Wakefield St Michael's side that they didn't wilt.

For once their bowlers were unable to make the breakthroughs they needed, but they showed in their batting that they are a side with a lot of character.

Although they never looked like overhauling the Hartshead Moor score, they made a creditable 206-7.

St Michael's made a solid start before their in-form all-rounder Joe Finnigan was dismissed by Raul Qayyum after scoring 34 of the first 48 runs.

That man Khan then hogged the limelight again as St Michael's slipped to 96-4. He bowled Alex Leyshon (19), ran out skipper Mark Atkinson (19) and bowled Ryan Wilby (13).

St Michael's didn't buckle, however, and Andrew Borthwick made a determined 39 and, along with Marcus Leyshon (26), ensured that St Michael's gave Hartshead Moor something to think about without getting quite near enough to have realistic hopes of victory.

St Michael's can now focus on their bid to win the Conference Division title.

An interesting feature of the match was that all 13 players who batted made double figures.
