Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root have been named in the ICC’s Test Team of the Year after their impressive form throughout 2016.

The Yorkshire duo have been named alongside England colleagues Alastair Cook and Ben Stokes, with Cook captaining the team.

Former White Rose overseas stars Kane Williamson and Mitchell Starc also got the nod, with calculations on form taken from September last year to September this.

India all-rounder Ravi Ashwin has been named as the International Cricket Council’s Player of the Year, although his team-mate Virat Kohli was a surprise omission.

Bradford-born Bairstow and Root almost broke the record for most Test runs by an Englishman in a calendar year throughout 2016 with 1,469 and 1,477 respectively.

Both men passed 100 three times in 2016.

Bairstow takes the gloves in a side including three Australians.

The 27-year-old’s haul of runs in 2016 was a world record for a wicketkeeper, while he also claimed the world record for dismissals by a keeper in a calendar year with 69.

Jos Buttler was the only Englishman named in the one-day Team of the Year.
