National honours for Cleck youngster
Amy MacLean

Exciting prospect Cory O'Regan will box for England this weekend.

The 12-year-old from the Cleckheaton Boxing Academy has been picked for a three-way international tournament in Sheffield against lads representing Scotland and Wales.

O'Regan, boxing in the 34kg category, was a losing finalist in the national golden gloves competition - one of only two losses in 11 bouts.

Coach Keith Tate said: "He wasn't himself in the golden gloves final because of the nerves. But he's been boxing great in the gym and we're confident he will do himself justice in the international."

Meanwhile, Amy MacLean claimed another good win in the club's annual dinner show at the Cedar Court Hotel.

MacLean earned a unanimous decision against Katrina James from Welsh club Whintland and there are plans for a possible return match.

Former rugby player Liam Walsh grabbed his 11th win out of 13 after beating Macclesfield's Joe Colls.

Josh Ginnelly was named boxer of the night for his win against Scarborough opponent Danny Smith.

Unbeaten Michael Smith was a unanimous winner against Centurion ABC's Matthew Leathey and Jack Sunderland made it six wins on the trot by seeing off experienced Peter Bebbington (Macclesfield).

Cleckheaton heavyweight Alex Viliciauskas won a close decision against fellow Pole Alex Cichy (Bridlington) and Ivan Michaels stopped Macclesfield's Olly Collins in the third.

Cleckheaton's only setback was a majority loss to Eddie Al-Meskry against Halifax's Scott Glandin.

The show, backed by club sponsors Napoleon's Casino, was watched by nearly 300 diners.
