A third generation of the Upton family has put his name on Myrtle Park Bowling Club's Herbert Upton Challenge Cup.

David Upton, grandson of previous winner Norman and son of ten-times champion Michael, put his name on the trophy by defeating holder Ronnie Bowden 21-16 at the Waterloo Club in Blackpool, crown green bowling's most famous venue.

Michael, whose trophies came between 1975 and 2003, had to be content with the plate prize this time after a 21-4 success over Cliff Dennis.

The Herbert Upton Challenge Cup was first presented for competition in 1943 by Norman's father Herbert, Norman finally winning it himself in 1987 by defeating Michael. This year Norman, who is 84, was a semi-finalist.

Myrtle Park hired out the Waterloo green for free on the proviso that they had a meal at the premises afterwards.
