Bradford City Women: Wight fantastic return up front for Mel
Bradford City retained their unbeaten record in the Northern Combination after a resounding 5-1 win over Stockport County, with a hat-trick from the versatile Mel Garside-Wight.
City went behind early on but Garside-Wight, who performed superbly last season in goal, rediscovered the form of her FA Women’s Premier League days as a striker with City and Doncaster Belles, in a fine display of finishing. Also on target were Bridie Hannon and Dominique Hoad.
Steve Winterburn’s side are without a competetive game this week, after drawing a first-round bye in the West Riding County Cup, but will face a tough challenge in a friendly against Premier League (Northern) leaders Sheffield at Rawdon Meadows.
Bradford Park Avenue, for whom Sarah Huby scored twice in their 6-2 FA Cup second qualifying round defeat by Steel City, are at Hemsworth in a West Riding League game.
Huddersfield Town, who lost 3-1 at Liverpool Feds, will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they go to neighbours Lepton Highlanders for a first-round County Cup clash.
Holders Leeds United, from the FA Premier League, host a struggling Ossett Albion side still looking for their first North East Regional League win. Nicky Davies struck twice for Albion as they bowed out of the FA Cup 6-2 in their last game.
Amongst the other ties Silsden entertain Tingley, Kirklees go to Wigton Moor, Leeds City Vixens are at home to Ossett Town, Keighley Oaks, crushed 7-0 by Malet Lambert in their Regional League game, face Thornes, Guiseley, beaten 3-1 by Barnsley in the FA Cup, are at home to Brayton Belles, Silsden (Development) take on Farsley AFC and Rothwell, having set up an FA Cup tie at Bradford City following a 4-2 win over Westella in the last round, now go to Castleford White Rose in the county competition.
The Bradford City A team went down 2-1, despite a battling display, against Doncaster Belles and will be hoping for better luck in their next Regional League game at home to Wetherby.
Among those West Riding League clubs not involved in the County Cup, Northowram go to pointless Nostell for a Second Division fixture, while in Division Three, Ilkley play Crossley, Skipton are at home to Amaranth, and pointless Cleckheaton, beaten 8-0 by Rothwell in the League Cup, visit fellow pointless club Dewsbury Rangers.
Bradford City under-18 women bounced back from a defeat to thrash Brighouse 8-0 at Rawdon Meadows.
Passing with confidence, City led 3-0 at the break courtesy of goals from Mitchell, McPherson and Thompson.
There was no let-up after the break as further strikes from Turner, McPherson, King, Sharpe and Mathers completed the route.
