Thackley targeting Scarborough scalp in FA Vase
4:00pm Thursday 11th October 2012 in Sport By Ian Whiting
The FA Vase first-round draw did the two local clubs still in the competition no favours at all, with both facing league rivals on Saturday.
Thackley were granted home advantage but against Scarborough Athletic, one of the Baris Northern Counties East League Premier Division promotion favourites.
Brighouse Town were handed an away tie at Hall Road Rangers.
Town have won their last three league games and should have enough quality to progress against their hosts, who are struggling in the league.
However, Town’s last defeat was in a knockout competition as they were dumped out of the West Riding County Cup at the first hurdle by Division One outfit Knaresborough Town.
The visitors to Dennyfield will be strong favourites to get through, despite having to travel.
They have had a better start to the season than Thackley but the home side are capable of springing a surprise and cup football is renowned for upsets.
Liversedge are in league action and face a tough test as they head to Barton Town Old Boys who prevented second-placed Scarborough from going joint top in midweek when they held them to a 1-1 draw at home.
In Division One Askern Villa face a second game on the trot against Bradford opponents as they host Albion Sports after travelling to Eccleshill United in midweek.
Askern could have leapfrogged Albion with a win but they suffered a 5-2 defeat, which left them one point worse off than tomorrow’s visitors but having played two games more than them.
Kulwinder Sandhu’s Albion have been starved of league action recently but they were beaten last time out, 1-0 away at Knaresborough Town.
The midweek win over Askern did Eccleshill a power of good and they will hope to take the confidence from that performance into Saturday’s trip to fellow strugglers Selby Town.
Eccleshill moved up one place to 18th thanks to their win, which was a first for caretaker manager Dai Jones in only his second game in charge.
Selby are three places lower in second-from-bottom spot.
