Steve Whitaker makes stunning Bradford Winter League start

Unity D player Steve Whitaker could hardly have made a brighter start to the Bradford Winter League season.

Whitaker did not play much in the Summer League and his first call of duty in week one was to be thrown in at the deep end to play for Unity A in their Division One fixture against Highdale A.

Unity had only Ian Gomersall of their regular line-up available but Whitaker made sure no-one was missed as he won all three of his singles.

And with Gomersall also netting a treble, Unity registered an unexpected 6-4 success.

Whitaker was back in the Unity D team in week two as they faced Hermits A in Division Two and he continued his winning ways with another treble.

Geoff Dunne added two wins and together they took the doubles for a 6-4 victory.

There was a tight finish to the Division Two derby between Yeadon B and Pudsey A, with the two sides locked at 4-4 after new recruit Deo Jones took all three for Yeadon.

Martin Ashworth then looked to be on top against Linda Sanderson in the final singles when he led 2-0.

But Sanderson held her nerve and won the last three games 12-10, 12-10, 14-12 to put Pudsey ahead for the first time and she also joined Steve Winnard to take the doubles and complete a 6-4 verdict.
