Goals the one thing we're missing

Football is all about what happens in the two penalty boxes.

It’s nice to play well in between and entertain the fans but it all boils down to both ends of the pitch.

At one end, you’re trying to score goals while preventing the opposition from doing the same at the other.

Unfortunately at the moment we’re doing everything else but put the ball in the back of the net. It’s an area we need to address.

It’s frustrating because the last two performances against Port Vale and Rochdale have been absolutely spot on.

Everything is coming together, everybody looks confident and we are making lots of chances. Look at the amount of crosses we put in again on Tuesday.

But we just haven’t been able to stick those opportunities away. If we had, we’d have taken all six points this week rather than just one.

If we’d won the home game, we’d have probably taken a draw from Rochdale. They are a good team but we made them look very average.

That’s a real compliment to the way we played but unfortunately that doesn’t count for anything if you don’t score.

Their keeper had to make some saves but none were fantastic ones.

I had that chance on my left foot and I just thought about getting it on target with all the power I could. I probably hit it too well and it was straight at the keeper. Any slight slice on it would have beaten him in the corner.

But there are plenty of positives to take from the last week. We are playing well enough to win two or three football games with the amount of chances we’re creating.

I think we just need to get an early goal. The last two games we’ve seen opponents happy to sit back with everybody behind the ball. If we can get our noses in front, that changes everything and draws them out.
