City are through to the last 16 of the Capital One Cup after an amazing fightback to beat Burton.
Trailing 2-0 with only eight minutes left, Nahki Wells scored twice to force extra-time. And then young defender Stephen Darby spared the lottery of penalties with a long-range winner late in the second added period.
It was no more than City deserved for a spirited performance on a Valley Parade pitch that held up superbly considering the rain that had battered down constantly for two days.
Burton had struck first with their opening shot of the game, Billy Kee smashing home first time from Jack Dyer’s cross on 18 minutes.
And they doubled that advantage on the half hour through Aaron Webster’s header despite the best efforts of Gary Jones to clear it off the line.
Phil Parkinson had made six changes and threw on James Hanson , Wells and Kyel Reid in a triple substitution to give the home side more bite in the final half hour.
Their arrival did just that with the Bermudian striking twice in an incredible finish. With eight minutes left, he drove an angled shot past Tomlinson from James Meredith’s pass. And with time ticking away, Wells diverted Hanson ’s overhead kick home beneath a manic Kop.
Then it was down to Darby deep into extra-time to send City breathlessly through and dreaming of that exotic draw in the fourth round.

If Thompson is a CF I'm taking over from John Terry. Time to put any thought of him being anywhere near the top line to bed. Fight for the RW berth or play bit parts GT.
Happy that Nahki is finding his form again, 3 in 2 and his little nicks and flicks are coming off for him.
Hopefully Meredith now knows the 'rub' of our pitch, both those corners towards the kop hold water and hold the ball up, he switched off and allowed their RM to keep it in and deliver for a very good goal.
One good save from Duke still doesn't make him our number one, at the top of his game he was average, he has very little judgement on crosses or shots from distance. Time to hand over the gloves for good.
Finally, someone open Gary Jones' back, I'm sure he is an automaton. Still charging about 2 hours into the match.

Also at 0-2 Thomson was struggling with the straight balls trying to do Hansons job but was getting nowhere. Not Thomsons fault, he looked much better when not playing the striker role.
Crosses were very dangerous as were set pieces, the keeper kept flapping at them. Straight balls down the middle were a bit limp.
But apart from that, full credit to all. I know Duke gets a lot of stick, but made a fab save low down at 2-1 when their man was clean throughout that kept us in it.
And what did Connell have to do to get a free kick?

So PP made some changes, that's his decision, he knows our squad better than anyone but he made a triple sub on the hour mark, and boy, what an impact they made! Nice to see we have some strength in depth, even more so if we didn't deserve to be two down at the break, it shows we started with a strong eleven!
Sounds like the whole squad are really starting to gel. Let's not be complacent but take confidence and this fantastic work ethic in Saturday's game against Port Vale - they'll be a tough test, arguably the toughest so far on home soil! Especially as they lost last time out!

And anyone who says he should have been going for stuff in the 6 yard box (like the plonker sat behind me), just loom at the mess their keeper was making.

There is nothing to say JM would've saved that one on one in the 2nd half but there is nothing to say he wouldn't have been positioned better for the first and collected the second.
JM is more athletic, talks louder, maybe not better instruction but he barks it out, collects plenty of corners and crosses and isn't afraid of coming to the edge of his box, giving info to his defenders as he does.
Possibly being a bit negative for the sake of it on such a night but the above are the attributes I feel JM Hs over Duke.

What game were you watching? Duke was the one negative tonight. His reluctance to step more than one yard off his line looked like it un-nerved the whole defence, especially at set pieces. He flapped at one under the bar that he could have caught with his eyes closed and Thompson I think it was back headed one to safety just two yards from the goal line which any keeper worth his salt would have dealt with easily.
The Burton keepers mistakes, if you can call them that were actual saves from shots that were hard to deal with due to the skiddy surface and poor conditions. How you can compare that and make excuses for the tallest player in our team failing to deal with routine high balls landing inside our six yard area is beyond me.
Apart from that one minor failing it was an enjoyable game and good performance against one of League 2s form teams.

I do not agree. The Manager was using the CoC, to allow the whole Squad an opportunity to play. A tactic most Managers employ with the CoC and ' Paint Pot ' matches. It also gives players the chance to demonstrate their form, when not normally selected for league games; also allowing the manager, an opportunity to assess his full Squad.-WELL PLAYED THE MANAGER.

I believe Jon Mac wasn't risked last night because of a minor hip injury. Reid also started on the bench because of an ankle know and Oliver has a minor shoulder injury.
In short, i don't think it was simply a case of tinkering; it is a difficult balancing act for PP and in the end; he has got it right so far. I can't argue with your vew of the game; we were much more of a threat after the subs were made but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I also agree that Thompson looks so much better out wide than up front.

Anyway, apart form seeing the goals again on Sky Sports news last night and having this little bit to say, I think Duke could and probably should have done better with the first goal, I don't now think he should have come for the second. He did very well for the one on one at 2-1 down, that would have ended the game.
Time for me to put to bed my thoughts on our two keepers, I have given my reasons for my preference of Jonny Mac, I don't wish to argue with anyone who just has a different opinion.

Hanson, at his age doesn't need rest and if he does then at least let's try get the game won before we give him his breather. Anyway, these are the decisions PP gets paid for and we are in the last 16 of the cup, at some point over the 120 minutes both he and the team got something right.
I do not think we deserved to be two down and know full well with the A-Team on the pitch we would've been ahead by half time and not chasing the game. Glad to see Burton's time wasting didn't pay off.
