Three strikes and they're out! Phil Parkinson's delight at Bradford City hot-shots
7:30am Wednesday 19th September 2012 in Sport
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
Kyel Reid knee-slides his way over to the City fans to celebrate his first goal at Valley Parade
Phil Parkinson lauded City’s “first class” finishing after they claimed a fourth successive home win to join League Two’s early pace-setters.
Classy strikes from James Hanson , Kyel Reid and skipper Gary Jones sealed a 3-1 victory over Morecambe last night to extend the perfect start at Valley Parade .
Parkinson said: “It was a tough game because Morecambe have got a really good away record. To be the first team to beat them on their travels is a really good feeling.
“We were nice and tight and competitive and you always felt we would cause problems when we got the ball. The quality of our goals was first class.”
Hanson ’s fifth of the season just before the interval gave City the breakthrough after dominating the first half.
The Bantams chief added: “It was a top class finish and his all-round performance was good. His work ethic, his heading and his defending at set-plays were all spot on.
“He’s fitter than he’s ever been and he’s a fantastic athlete. He wants to be successful but he’s got to keep doing it.
“He has to win headers he has no right to, which is what he did. If you’re a centre back, you wouldn’t like to have marked him.”
Jones cleared off the line from Richard Brodie before Reid fired his first goal on home soil. Jack Redshaw immediately reduced the deficit before Jones made sure with a free-kick into the top corner.
Parkinson said: “My only complaint with the boys was that we lost our cool slightly and made a couple of rash decisions at the back. We lost our focus for a spell but that’s being hyper critical.
“We came through the other side of that and played some terrific stuff. Nahki (Wells) and Will (Atkinson) came on and made great contributions.
“I’m so pleased for Reidy because that’s his first goal at Valley Parade. When he got that, he looked ten-foot tall.
“Gary also deserves a goal for his performances since he’s been at the club. Big players step up in important moments and what a captain’s contribution that was.
“I can’t remember us scoring a free-kick from the edge of the box since I’ve been here. It’s frustrating because when the stats come up at the end of the season, you’ve got to get goals from those positions.
“We’ve got players who are tricky who are going to get fouled in that area but we know Gary is someone who can score from there.”
Keeper Jon McLaughlin provided a late injury scare when he had to come off after hurting his side while making a save from Kevin Ellison.

This was a first class show from the Bantams with three very good goals from three very good players, against a side who look as if they will have a very good season.
The best of City's four wins so far, and perhaps the most pleasing thing is after years of being almost 'goalshy' City have now scored 12 goals in home leaue games, conceding only two!!
But this game was MORE than just a win, for in many ways it 'felt' like 'evidence' that City are going to have their best season for quit a fw years. ay, i' sill early, the away form hasn't matched the 'home' but City are beginning to look more f a 'real team' playing for each other, making the most of their individual/collectiv
e skills and making things 'count.'
The first half did see some chancsmissed but James Hanson's strike was very, very good AND at that 'gut wrenching' time for those who concede-a few mins from 'time.'
In the scondhal, Morecambe came back strongly and with litte more than 20 mins to go, 1-0 DIDN'T lok a big enough lead.
Kyle Reid, bac form tonight (and taking a kicking!) made a run, scored witha 'rasper.'!!
Then Morecambe got one backnearly equalised!
Finally, Gary Jones (with a nod to BridgeWilkinson-our last decent free kick expert) put in a scoring free kick-the 35 year old celebrated like a tenager!!
Morecambe will beat many another Lge two side this season and yes,Kevin Ellison is dangerous, but..this resut/performance could just be the catalyst to send City off into 'orbit' and up to the very top end of the league, winning/drwing mny moe han they lose!!
PS: What has happened to Nahki Wells? Has he lost his 'mojo' or 'spark' ? It looks like it on tonight's evidence! Where are the 'dynamic' bursts of energy/chasing forlorn chances and 'succeeding'/running
after a lost ball and catching it??
The ref was....well put it this way...he didn't seem to ..er..lke City..much!!

It sounds as if the guys we have playing for us are enjoying it and are pulling together. Long may this continue. Let's hope they can keep their focus and have an excellent day out at Oxford on Saturday.
Could we really be turning the corner? I know Bradfordians don't do empty optimism, but there seems to be a feeling developing. Imagine if the real electricity starts coming back to Valley Parade.

difficult for me to get to games, so thanks to those of you who come on here and report. No disresepct to the T & A, but I usually jump to the comments at the bottom to get a proper feel for what's going on.

Jones and Doyle have been bossing the home games - it's fair to call them the best pairing we've had at this level based on the 4 home games, an area that has seen us often overrun in recent years.
Only concern is that at times the defence might go to sleep a bit, like when we allowed Wimbledon to pull one back easily and last night when 2-0 should have been it.
Not that I want it to happen, but I wonder how we'll get on mentally should we concede first at home as it hasn't happened yet.

As for the crowd getting on their backs, there hasn't really been any of it when things go wrong because I think there is a general appreciation for the exponentially improved standard of football, and at times more importantly, effort.
I'm not getting too giddy but the team is unrecognisable from previous years and that on it's own deserves a little optimism.

The thing is now I think that we will revert back to 4-5-1 for the trip to Oxford meaning both Connell and Wells will be benched. It possibly isn't the way I would approach the match but I'm not paid for my footballing thoughts and Parky is. I think he will be of the mind he was for the Accy match and would rather come back unbeaten than to go gung ho and try nick all three.
I've always felt attack is the best form of defence, Parky appears to think shape and regiment is the best form of defence. And for that reason I think he will recall Atkinson into a midfield of five saving Wells and/or Connell for a 20 minute blast depending upon how the match is going.

All around the park players are performing and we have some people that can really play football.
It has been a long time coming but just maybe this might be a year of success for City.

despite limited time he saw alot of the ball and helped out defensively. When he plays like that he's a good player.
Also agree about the contract. he's a young lad and the next contract is an important one for his career. Footballs changed and contracts and players comitting themselves has changed too ( in many ways for the worse) but thats how it is. No one is questioning why davies for example only has a one year contract. Players have to protect themselves nad their familly like anyone else.....i'm not for greed though and those multi-millionaire footballers who leave clubs so that they can win things should be staying where they are and attempting to win things there.....

We had ONE cleared off the line, ONE hit the post and ONE goal. We also dominated the game and had more attempts on and off target in that game than we did in the match against Rotherham, when we went 4-4-2 and got hammered.
And it was 4-5-1 not 5-4-1 or as Parky said it was(it really really wasn't) 4-3-3.

He hasn't lost his 'mojo' or anything else. The only thing he has lost is the 'love' from some of his own fans and this will only end one way..... with him leaving the club..!
P.S. You state you hadn't heard that he has yet to sign a new extended contract. Where have you been? There are plenty of posters mentioning it all the time. I suppose you didn't know he had been carrying an injury either then and that he has been having treatment/injections to help?

Anyway Great result. Difficult to pick out a MOM everyone played well but for me Jones just edged it. Doyle also played great and it will be difficult for Ravenhill to get back in at the moment. Shame that Johnny Mac has got injured hope he recovers well, and soon. The save from Ellison when he got injured was superb. Although there is not much difference as stoppers between him and Dukey I think the defence has been showing more confidence since Johnny Mac has been between the sticks. He seems to command the goal area better and does not hesitate to come and collect the ball. So well done lads and lets hope we can build on that at Oxford.
