Andrew Davies: My goal was straight off Bradford City training ground

Andrew Davies has insisted his Barnet goal was intentional.

Like his previous 45-yard free-kick against Wimbledon, there were a few doubts if the centre half meant to hit the target. But Davies was adamant his looping header from Gary Jones’ free-kick was a practised move.

He said: “We’ve worked on it in training. Gaz overhit the ball a little bit and I just had to direct it back across goal.

“I was aiming towards the back post, that was all I could have done with it. But the second I headed it, I knew the ball was going in.”

Davies is bubbling as City look to follow up Saturday’s success with another home victory over Morecambe.

“We could have started off a bit sharper against Barnet but we know we can beat teams when they come to Valley Parade ,” he said.

“It’s important we win at home. The manager’s drilled it into us that if we start like we did against Wimbledon then we can beat anyone in this league.

“Morecambe are good on the counter but they also lost 4-0 at home to Fleetwood, so we know they are breakable. There’s no reason why we can’t score against them.”

Phil Parkinson was as pleased with the clean sheet as the result at the weekend and Davies reckons the City rearguard is building a good understanding.

He said: “We’ve been working a lot on squeezing up and defending as a unit. If we keep doing that, I don’t see a back four in this league as strong as ours.”
