Bradford Bulls: Francis Cummins is head coach material, says Mick Potter

Mick Potter believes the club should promote from within Mick Potter believes the club should promote from within

Francis Cummins would be the ideal candidate to succeed Mick Potter if the Bulls coach’s reign does not continue beyond this season.

That is the view of Potter himself, whose future remains undecided as the club wait to hear if they will survive in Super League.

Potter and his coaching staff have been working on a voluntary basis since being made redundant by administrator Brendan Guilfoyle on July 2.

Potter has consistently stated that he would be open-minded about the prospect of returning to his job on a paid basis.

He has spoken to new owners Gerry Sutcliffe and Omar Khan since the pair came into situ earlier this month but it remains to be seen whether a deal to bring him back can be struck.

Should the Australian sever his ties with the Bulls, then he feels the men who have supported him during his two-year tenure should be handed the reins.

He reckons the highly-rated Cummins would be an ideal candidate for the top job, with fellow assistant coach Lee St Hilaire as his right-hand man.

“If I’m not here then Franny would be a good option as head coach, with Lee playing a supporting role,” said the 48-year-old.

“Franny is a smart, intelligent guy in his own right.

“He made a trip to Australia to visit a number of NRL clubs last year and came back with a wealth of knowledge.

“Not only that, he’s got a lot of other experience from his time at Leeds.

“You could do a lot worse than have Francis Cummins coaching Bradford Bulls.”

One sincerely hopes not. But who could blame him, after all the total cr ap he has had to contend with for months now - and for no pay after that very strange administrator decided you could run a RL club with no coaching staff, but instead a most fortuitous experienced "volunteer"...

No-one should have been expected to have gone through what he and the rest of the coaching staff had inflicted upon them. It was a total discgrace from start to finish.

Not even Guilfoyle believed you could run a club without a coach or chief executive. It was indeed very fortuitous that the same coach & chief executive that Caisley promised to bring a few weeks earlier, should peter Hood step aside, just both appeared willing to work for nothing on the same day.

I cant wait for the investigation into the actions of Caisley, Guilfoyle & some of the names behind the ABC bid. (especially the 'C' bIt) should it ever happen!

In the meantime lets just hope Mr Khan can get the go ahead so he can reappoint Mick Potter & the players and the Bulls can start to build for the future & celebrate 150 years of rugby Football in Bradford.

Cummings and st hilaire are not ready for a challenge of this magnitude....
Cummings is highly rated and will in time make a great head coach ...but maybe a couple of more years under his belt as an assistant is required

while I hesitate to dsagree with Mick Potter, I too think it would be to soon for Franny to be a Head Coach at SL level, you need to do 5-7 years as an Assistant before stepping up to that level. Steve Macnamara is a good case in point of getting the job to soon. If the Bulls get demoted there may be a case for him to take the reins at CL level

I agree, it's too early for Franny to take hold of the reins of a Super League Club but I do feel the Bulls have an obligation towards him for the way he has helped the club through adversity.
