Rawdon cyclist David Stone storms to Paralympic gold

Rawdon cyclist David Stone struck Paralympic Games gold for the third time today as he successfully defended his mixed T1-2 road race title at Brands Hatch.

He relinquished his time-trial title on Wednesday and was disappointed with bronze.

But the 31-year-old, who has cerebral palsy and rides a tricycle, bounced back in the 24-kilometre road race to win his third Paralympic gold medal overall, seven seconds ahead of Italy's Giorgio Farroni.

David Vondracek, of the Czech Republic, was three minutes 17 seconds behind in third.

Stone was praised by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle, for his latest success.

“Congratulations to David for winning a fantastic gold medal at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

“After he was slightly disappointed with his performance in the time trial on Wednesday it was brilliant to see him respond in style today in front of the home crowd.

“We are thrilled that he was able to defend his road race title from Beijing and look forward to celebrating with him when he gets back to Leeds.”
