Rotherham 4 City 0
4:58pm Saturday 1st September 2012 in Sport
By Simon Parker, Bradford City Reporter
For the second week running, a City league game was settled by half-time.
But the boot was very much on the other foot this time as Rotherham pocketed the points with three goals in the first 35 minutes. They added a fourth in the closing stages but the contest had been settled.
And to add salt to the wounds of the 2,000 travelling fans, two of those goals came from former Bantam Gareth Evans .
Phil Parkinson’s side arrived at the New York Stadium with confidence high after three straight wins.
But they paid a heavy price for not closing down and giving Rotherham far too much room in the first half.
City made the worst possible start as Rotherham grabbed the lead inside the second minute. Michael O’Connor had time and space 30 yards out and his shot flew past Matt Duke’s right hand.
The visitors shook off the early blow to respond with some good pressure and took the game to the Millers, looking to use Kyel Reid and Zavon Hines on the flanks. Luke Oliver ’s shot was saved and Nahki Wells drove over from a James Hanson flick-on before they were further rocked by a second Rotherham goal after 24 minutes.
Evans fired home against his old club and then celebrated in front of the away end, jumping and punching the air to rub it in to the mass of travelling fans.
Reid almost embarrassed Scott Shearer with a cross from a short corner that the Rotherham keeper just managed to bundle clear. But City were far too open at the other end and Kari Arnason headed wide from the home side’s first corner.
But a third Rotherham goal ten minutes before the break left City with a mountain to climb. Ben Pringle picked up a loose ball in midfield, surged into space and beat Duke via the post.
Wells thought he had clawed one back just before the break but was ruled offside after Shearer had parried Nathan Doyle’s initial effort into his path.
Will Atkinson replaced Hines at half-time and Reid rattled an early shot not too far wide. But Rotherham still threatened to score more and Gary Jones nodded Kayode Odejayi’s header off the line from a corner.
Evans blazed over from another good chance created by Daniel Nardiello. Evans then almost caught City with a quick break but Oliver made a vital lunging tackle in the box.
Alan Connell came on for Wells and created a couple of chances but there was more danger at the other end as Duke saved from O’Connor.
And inevitably it was Evans who netted the only goal of the second half, beating Duke at his near post with four minutes left.

Looking at the BBCs stats it was pretty even. I do think playing Hines away is a gamble as we line up 4-2-4 rather than 4-4-2. We always tend to get overrun in midfield.
It is that reality check but looking at the table we have had a tough start although losing by four does knock our GD. PPs away record is shocking and needs to be addressed. I am a bit shocked that our much vaunted defence has now conceded seven in two away games - worst than anything on offer last season.
No need to panic - but it does look that we are some way from competing with the best in the Division and no one can use "time to gel" excuse as both Gillingham & Rotherham have made many changes.

We did have good possession but lack of a decent final ball meant attack was kept quiet.
It was the team fans would have wanted PP to start with and will leave us scratching our heads. The team that won at Watford should certainly be getting a chance after today.
One other concern - in the first half when we were losing it we started taking players out and got a fair few yellows. Contrast that to previous games where i think we've had one all season?
Learn from today or we definatley wont be in the top 6.

However, I didn't get carried away with our good start to the season so this reversal doesn't concern me unduly either.
There's plenty of points to be taken from lesser teams than Rotherham and, with the quality in this squad, I'm more confident than I would have been last season, that we'll bounce back.

as i said after Gills away, we played some okay stuff again but in much shorter spells but Rotherham were clinical and much more ready to receive and play the ball. Had a feeling whichever team came out and handled the occasion through letting their football do the talking would prevail and sadly for us that was Rotherham - much more comfortable with the derby atmosphere than our lads from kick off.
*
One or two things, think criticism of Meredith is harsh, none of our lads wanted the ball at times today and he's certainly started well enough this season to warrant some slack on that front.
*
Secondly, if we average win one lose one this year we'll end up with 69 points. Improve our cohesion as i think we will and turn that into an average nearer win two lose one and we'll be in for a good year - nowhere near over.
*
Finally, what a classless pill ock Evans is. What was it he was so unhappy about at City - his fat paycheck for little return or the fact he wishes he was still at a big club? Don't remember City fans being so harsh on him as to deserve that today!

He could never perform infront of a big crowd and is probably more comfortable playing infront of one man and his dog!! I mean Rotherham sold about 4000 season tickets on the back of a new stadium and a squad which has been assembled on a massive budget! As long as we dust ourselves down and learn from this we will progress! Remember losing 3-0 to Ipswich on our last promotion campaign! That was after a poor start to the season! We will turn it round. Worry not! I wish we had sold Mr Premadonna Wells last week and brought in Nathan Ellington as young Wells seems to have dilutions if grandeur. Mr I'm too good to sign! Wasn't there, as I was playing cricket, and victim of a truly shocking LBW decision, but seeing the goals, it looked like a day when everything they hit turned to gold; 3 of them were great strikes, particularly the first.
Always thought Evans was a decent player for us, but he was a confidence player, and the climate of negativity, plus the crowd's abuse totally destroyed him. Maybe some fans should think of the affect it has on particularly our young players.
I don't know what was the more humiliating; Parky having to shake that fat tranny's hand after a tonking, or me having to apologise to the umpire after giving him abuse following his shocking decision, at least we'll have something in common; neither of us would've meant it.

"where did you get big game from? It's just another league 2 Yorkshire derby". So, a big game then. Name me three bigger league games this season mate?
I'm not even starting to be negative. The home games have shown we have far better players than last year. It is though, a matter of plain fact, that we have played 2 away league games and lost both conceding 7.
With the players we have that has to lead you to at least assess whether the tactics are right. Personally I don't think they are. We should tighten up and pack the midfield and try to nick wins away. 442 with wingers is great at home and entertaining but naive as a tactic when away against two promotion contenders.
Tactical ineptness was the reason PP was criticised last year. I hope he states not give cause to criticise this year.
There is an argument he had the right to have faith in his 442 attacking system after two frankly amazing cup wins but the response to that needs a footballing essay. In a nut shell its cup footy and better teams give more space.
In PP we must trust.
Up the City.

'PP' chose to start the match with two wingers, a 35 year old and a half fit player in midfield. This led to City being overrun in that crucial area of the field. Rotherham were good but City's 'tactics' (?!!) made it easier for The Millers. THIS is the most disurbing thing to come out of this result.
'PP' is responsible for picking the side/tactics. He will be applauded in those games where he gets it right (we've already had afew) but yesterday, mistakes were made that contributed to the 'rout'.
Two wingers, unless you've got a pair like Georgie Best, Jimmy Johnstone, Eddie Gray, Stan Matthews or Garrincha is always dangerous, playing away in the 'modern era'.
City and particularly 'PP' must learn from this experience. Defeats are to be expected as we go through the season, even to promotion challengers, but 'drubbings' ARE avoidable...or should be!!

You say.....deadbeat still cannot organise a team for a" REALLY BIG GAME" I guess the wins against Notts County and Watford were not big games then.......now run along and let your mum change your nappy, as I guess you are full of it.

Ah well, that's what can happen when you stand off a decent player with the ball -and Rothers had a few decent players. Rotherham played the forward ball very well. A high forward ball would have been easy for our central defenders to deal with but Rotherham were too smart for that, they played the ball BETWEEN our defenders for their forwards to run onto. That eliminated any dominance we would have had in the air. An entertaining game even though we got hammered.
ps The thing that annoyed me as much as the defeat was some of the players had to be TOLD by PP to go show their appreciation to the away following that stayed till the very end. Hmmm!.
From the report on the excellent "Width of a Post", it also sounds like Will Atkinson is doing his best to make me eat humble pie!
I find it very strange that Nathan Doyle still appears to some way off full fitness given that he must
have been doing some kind of fitness work while he was looking for a new club and that he's been with us for three weeks.

To me it was a simple case of one of those days when a player is not particularly effective and someone else is brought on to try to make an impact on the game. I have made the point on a number of my posts before about playing with two wingers and this sometimes leading to the two players in midfield being overrun/outnumbered by the oppositions midfield. I think there was a bit of that on Saturday. Nathan Doyle would have certainly been in my starting line up for Saturday's game regardless of whether he is still a little short of match fitness -and you know I rate Will Atkinson. Just one of those days I'm afraid -I hope- and they were not 4 goals better than us. A better team on the day got their reward with a little help from the ref who allowed their players to stop our flow with fouls and time wasting that were not punished with yellow cards but was very quick to show yellow cards to our players and blow up for minor physical contact. Doyle was taken out by what looked like a poor tackle from behind and their player gets just a talking to. Nevertheless, Rovrum WERE deserving winners.

Saying all that, Duke could have done far better with three of the goals. In regards to which keeper is the best on the BCFC books, i'd say Duke.
bcfc1903 wrote:I can tell you I prefer Johnny mac to Duke however Duke could do little for any of the goals yesterday and had he not been on top of his game they may have got 6 it was the defence that was a shambles not closing down players but I doubt we will play many other teams who have the players like Pringle and Nardello upfront who are way too good for league 2
yangyeight wrote:I might not know sh...it but i know goalkeeping, and i don't think we have a decent keeper in the club unless one of the juniors is decent. JM wont get picked up by a league club once his contract expires and Duke should have done far far better with three of the goals, he also seems to have a weakness regarding long range shots. Let's get Jansson back!!!
bcfc1903 wrote:i did go and you don't know sh-it.
Didn't go but the goals were poor, in all honesty i thought Duke should have saved both Evans shots and i'd question him over the first. No panic but imo we haven't a decent keeper in the club. I'll go further, put OscarJansson behind that Bradford City FC defence and we get promoted. Hopefully Parkinson will correct this glaring weakness in the side quickly.
got done early and never recovered, smple as.
should have changed team tactics before game but once we went 1-0 down we lost our composure.
just a bad day all round and they would not serve beer at half time because and i quote, "you lot are too rowdy!"
ha ha!
what a joke, its a football game not tennis!!
roll on next game...
Regarding the beer, that is a total disgrace, football fans rowdy, whatever next bad language banned and a swear box installed. Don't know if some of the police nowadays could have coped with the Bradford City fans in the 70's, rowdy doesn't come close.
