Kyel Reid has urged City to snap up his former West Ham wing twin Zavon Hines.

Phil Parkinson is seriously considering putting an offer to the 23-year-old free agent, who has been training with the club since last week.

Reid came up through the famed Upton Park academy alongside Hines, who can play on either flank as well as down the middle, and would love to be reunited with him at Valley Parade .

“Zavon has done well since he’s been here and I know that the manager likes him,” he said.

“Fingers crossed that something can be agreed and that he joins us. He would be a massive asset to us.”

Parkinson admits City are still a bit light on numbers as Saturday’s league opener at Gillingham fast approaches.

Another winger remains an area he is keen to fill, not only to add natural width on the right side but also provide genuine competition to keep Reid on his toes.

Adding another potential match-winner in the squad would also prevent defences from ganging up on Reid, who kicked off the new term in typically exciting fashion in the Capital One Cup win at Notts County.

He said: “I wanted to follow on how I finished last season. I just want to kick on this year and have another great season.

“I want to improve in every game and learn from any mistakes I make. But you also need that competition for places because you don’t want to get complacent.”

City’s unexpected triumph over the League One side was only the third time in the past 11 years they have cleared the first hurdle of the competition.

James Hanson ’s stunning curler clinched it in extra-time and Reid felt they fully deserved to go through to tomorrow’s second-round draw.

“Beating Notts County will give the lads massive confidence and I thought we were the better team,” he said.

“They’re a League One team and did well last season before bringing in a few more during the summer.

“They are one of the favourites to be up there again, so it’s a great achievement for us to come out with the win.

“It was a great finish from Hanson and he deserved it. He worked hard for us up there and I was delighted for him.”

Reid has cited City’s injection of quality over the summer as a genuine cause for optimism ahead of a crucial season. Stand-in skipper Gary Jones, in particular, can be a key figure.

Reid said: “Gary is a terrific player with bundles of experience. It’s good to have someone like him alongside you who gives us guidelines.

“I don’t know how the gaffer can pick a team now because it will be tough for him. He’s brought in some great signings.

“We’ve got our style of play and everybody has gelled together.”
