Pre-season results not the priority for Guiseley boss Kittrick
The Lions have had some unimpressive spells in the friendly fixtures to date but that is part and parcel of the pre-season schedule, according to manager Steve Kittrick.
The whole squad needs time on the pitch and the coaching staff must run the rule over potential recruits.
Kittrick said: “There comes a point when you have to give the trialists a run-out because the only way you can find out about them is to see them in a game.
“You can see a lot from a player in training and little knock-about short games but you can tell a lot more about him once he’s out there. We have to get them involved in some of the friendlies because it’s not going to cost you points.
“With new signings, it’s totally different because you have usually seen them playing for their previous club. Sometimes they have played against you.
“With people recommended to you that are on a trial period or young lads that have come through the ranks, the bottom line is that you will only learn about them in a game.
“I’m pleased with the fitness levels of all the squad following our pre-season training and then the warm-up games, so now my mind is made up about the players we have had on trial.
“Sometimes the supporters want more from pre-season in terms of results but we have to get things right from our side and that is what these games are for.”
Guiseley play at Kittrick’s former club Ossett Town tomorrw in their final friendly before the new Blue Square Bet North Division season gets underway next Saturday.
