Bradford City striker Nahki Wells in no rush over contract negotiations

Nahki Wells insists he is totally focused on another big season with City, even though his new contract remains unsigned.

The Bermudian striker has a year to go on the deal he was given last summer.

After a bright debut campaign, City hope to tie him down with an improved long-term offer to last until 2016.

That was first mentioned at the end of last season but the club are keen not to put Wells under any pressure.

Talks are expected to pick up in due course – with Wells adamant his attention will not be distracted by any uncertainty over his future.

He said: “At the moment we haven’t agreed anything. I’m not going to go into specifics but sooner or later, something will happen.

“I’m here to the end of the season and nothing’s going to make me any less committed. I love playing for Phil (Parkinson) and Steve Parkin and I just want to do the best I can for the club.

“I’m taking it game by game. All I can do is keep playing well and scoring goals and it will fall in my favour.”

The four-year deal would strengthen City’s position regarding any future fee as well as boost Wells’ current wages. The club would still be entitled to a compensation figure should he leave next summer.

There has been no confirmed interest so far in the exciting 22-year-old, who broke into City’s side in December and finished his first full campaign in England with 12 goals.

Wells has netted in all three friendlies and is confident he can handle any added expectation.

He added: “I feel it’s different. I’m seen as an important player but I enjoy having that pressure.

"I enjoy being looked at as someone who can score goals and win games for the team. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Alan Connell and Garry Thompson have added to the attacking mix but Wells is determined to make the starting line-up for the Capital One Cup first round in 11 days.

“When I broke in last season there were probably three or four names (up front) but now it looks like there are four or five. But my main aim is to do my work and show the gaffer I’m ready to start in the 11 against Notts County – I want to play in that and score.”
