Carl McHugh in frame to fill Bradford City left back vacancy

Trialist Carl McHugh is bidding to be one of the 'two or three' new faces Phil Parkinson plans to bring in Trialist Carl McHugh is bidding to be one of the 'two or three' new faces Phil Parkinson plans to bring in

Phil Parkinson has ruled out a Valley Parade return for Matt Fry.

The City boss wants to add another “two or three” new faces to the squad now they have returned from Ireland.

Left back is one position he intends to strengthen, with no back-up currently for James Meredith.

But Parkinson will not be going back for Fry, who is without a club since leaving City at the end of last season.

Irish teenager Carl McHugh could be in the reckoning as he continues his trial at Apperley Bridge this week.

The 19-year-old former Reading trainee, who can play both centre half or left back, missed Saturday’s 2-1 win at Bray with a minor knock.

But Parkinson has liked what he has seen of McHugh so far and wants to keep close tabs on him.

He said: “Carl’s done really well and he’s got a lot of good attributes.

“He had a slight injury but he’s coming over so we can have a good look at him.”

With Andrew Davies laid low by a bug, Luke Oliver and Rory McArdle both had to play the full game – highlighting the need to bolster numbers at the back.

Parkinson added: “I’m pleased with how it’s shaping up but we obviously need to be stronger in certain areas and we can hopefully do that in the next week or so.

“We’ve got to look at getting an extra two or three players in the squad, which we are working on.

“Even though the first few signings of the summer were defenders we are short, certainly at left back cover. We have got McArdle and Stephen Darby at right back but we need to bring in another one on the left.”

Midfielder Scott Donnelly was the only trialist on view at the Carlisle Grounds. Anthony McNamee and Michael Boateng had left the tour early for a prior engagement but remain under consideration.

Parkinson was happy with City’s efforts against the strongest pre-season opponents they have faced so far.

“Bray are a decent side with a big squad and they hadn’t had a game leading up to this one, so they were able to play their full team.

“It was hard but that’s what we wanted and I’m pleased to get the win.”

There are a total of 19 Days to the Gillingham ( A ) First League Match.

I am trying to remain patient with the ' Building ' of a New Squad. But any future signings, have missed pre-season -' Bonding '--.Plus will need to fit in quickly with any playing tactics, and the Squad that plays these early matches.
*
I suspect Loan Players may be used now. Which is not really the way to gradually build a promotion chasing Squad--to achieve promotion--and sustaining that promotion.

Don't panic freddy. The starting eleven plus three subs is already there. We will only be signing cover for other positions. I'm more than happy with the team so far. Per season seems to be goin to party's plan too. Onwards and upwards. Roll on notts county and gills.

Gotta agree with you mate i said weeks ago we should have had the squad complete before we went to Ireland,Anybody coming in know is a realtive stranger like a new kid coming into a new school two weeks after the start of a new term. Also there is the fittness thing they openly admitted that the ones who have come in are some way shorter in fittness levels than the existing players where the hell does that leave anybody coming in now!
As for loans unless i drempt it i thought the club said that we wouldnt go down that road again as its no good (Davies the exception).

if we can sign donnelly, mcnamee & ideally another fullback (who could play both sides) I think we will have a decent squad, with options throughout. I do not agree with a centre half playing fullback though as it usually prevents overlapping runs etc
With the young lad at left back coming through the ranks i would spend my money on a RB.
keep away from loans and we will have a good mix.

Think he has got his starting 11.
Anymore signings will be back up for what we have got. Some of the players we have signed are able to play in various positions so no need to worry about bonding as any signings now will probably be bench warmers anyway!

People act like we are the one team in england who are doing things like we are.

We have signed like 8 people so far, we have a core team. The window is open for a few more weeks so we will continue to look, just cause they miss most of pre season doesnt just mean they wont fit in and will fail.

And talk about avoiding loan deals is absurd, higher level loan players can play a HUGE part. Or are we forgetting Andrew Davies, Dean Furman and Nicky Law.

Don't see why we son't play with 3 at the back. my view is 3 centre backs is stronger than 2. Thinl we could do with a couple of wingers thou no replacments for Reid or Thompson is stead of a left back

I must be the only poster on this site who thinks that eleven players make up a football team, then put together another team + goalie = the reserves who think why am I here when some old crock stops me from advancing, eat your heart out Ross Hannah.

Just a comment to jackez20591, has any single season been changed by a loan player? The only time I agree with loans are when it is a good opportunity to look at a possible signing. Even with Davies last season, you can not say we would have been relegated if we had not had him, and would we have done any worse without Furman and Law? Looking back what benefit were the latter 2? Did they help us win promotion or just keep our own players out of the team and from developing? There may be the very rare occasion where a club can get a player that would not normally play in their division and give the fans a buzz. Just food for thought.

Why is everbody panicking because we have not signed 20 players? I take it Man City/Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Sheff U, Real, Rotherham et al have signed all their players now at this stage? I really can't believe comments sometmes, we have youngsters waiting in the wings for a chance we have half a dozen strikers, we already have cover for every position from the reserves and youth set up. Who was the last player to get into the squad from the youth set up and get some games in regularly, the last I can think of is Luke O'Brien 4 seasons ago, I may be wrong, but it doesn't make good reading. Stop panicking, let Parkinson do his job, we have some excellent players, a good squad, we just need a couple of back ups, and don't forget Williams is back at the end of the year when fixtures will be building up, and he is not that bad to have to rely on if need be. We will have injuries, but guess what, so will every single other club in the division, this is where the youngsters and reserves get a chance. In Parkinson I trust, and I do not expect another "big name" arrival, just decent enough squad members.

McLaughlin, Duke

Darby, Meredith, Davies, Oliver, Williams, McArdle

Ravenhill, Reid, Jones, Jones, Atkinson, Thompson

Hanson, Wells, Hannah, Connell

Not to mention some of the younger players coming through. Thompson I will class as a midfielder, but it wouldn't surprise me if we have 3 up front with him playing on the right. Hanson, Wells, Hannah and Connell know where the goal is, if we can get a good supply line for them, something we really not really had consistently since Summerbee. If we can get that, I am sure we will have the top scorer next season. Hannah I really would love to see get a run of games though.

The amount of people on here who think they're more knowledgable than a man who has worked with Arsene Wenger is beyond belief

I know someone who worked closely with Ken Morrison, but he never has had any money.

Who anyone has worked with is irrelevant. It's down to each individual and the skills and characterstics they possess.
